Things to see and do near Arequipa

If you find yourself itching to get out of the city centre and wishing you could explore some of the treacherous terrain that surrounds Arequipa, then be sure to take a tour of the Cañon de Colca and the El Misti Volcano.

Formed by a huge seismic fault between the Coropuna and Ampato volcanoes, the Cañon is one of the world's deepest canyons. Tours can be organised through a travel agent or tour operators in Arequipa's plaza. Although you can fit a tour into one day, it is best to go for at least two days in order for a complete experience of the Cañon. Also, don't forget to pack your swimwear as the nearby thermal springs are great for a quick dip!

Standing at 5830m, The El Misti Volcano towers over the city of Arequipa and provides a great activity for people who like to climb! It takes about two or three days to reach the summit, as thin air makes the climb hard work. However, any fit, acclimatised trekker should be fine in reaching the summit; El Misti has one of the easiest ascents of any mountain. Interestingly enough, an expedition in 1998 found 6 mummies near the top of the mountain! So be sure to keep your eyes peeled…

As Arequipa is set right next to the Andes, it is impossible to withdraw yourself from the temptation of really getting to know the surrounding area. The sublime beauty of the mountains and volcanoes that surround the city are so breathtaking, that any self-confessed couch potato will be up for a spot of mountain climbing!
